I've always been fascinated with mobster movies. Inside Bugsy's Bar & Bistro, one finds a wall with framed black & white prints of notorious underworld figures, from Lucky Luciano, Al Capone and Bugsy Siegel. Even a print from the classic Godfather film, nicely complementing the dark wooden chairs and tables like the speakeasies of the prohibition-era. Lunch was definitely going to be interesting...
It all started in 2007 when a group of friends thought of opening their very own bar. Inspired by prohibition-era speakeasies, they called it Bugsy's, named after Benjamin Siegel, a prominent underworld crime boss, and the man behind Las Vegas. What started as a fun idea among friends has now blossomed into three branches. Great food at reasonable prices works all the time, even Benjamin Siegel would have to agree.
My lunch begins with Marco's Honey Garlic Wings (P 185 Solo/6pcs), perfectly fried wings covered with a sweet honey garlic sauce. The sweet glaze blends well with the crisp wings, and yes, do use your hands for this. A perfect starter, great with a cold beer.
Then, my main course arrived. The Bugsy Siegel (P 695), USDA Angus ribeye (minimum of 400 grams) served with mashed potatoes, green beans and red wine sauce.
For the price, I was impressed with the size of the steak. Bugsy's Bar & Bistro guarantees a minimum of 400 grams, and you get real value for money. I go for medium rare, and it's great as is. Seasoned with just salt and pepper, you really don't need anything else. The mashed potatoes are real, with real chunks, and the rough mash is rustic and comforting. A pretty decent steak, and great value too.
A chicken and steak lunch at Bugsy's...come heavy and get ready to whack a pretty good meal at Bugsy's Bar & Bistro.
Bugsy's Bar & Bistro is located at Unit C-105, Citygolf Plaza, Julia Vargas Avenue, Ortigas, Pasig City or call 489-4985 for inquiries.
